The Graduate Program in Mathematics (PPGMAT) at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) began its activities in 2009, following CAPES approval of the APCN proposal for the creation of the Academic Master's Degree in Mathematics, established in a temporary association with the Graduate Program in Mathematics of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) for a period of four years. In its first four-year evaluation, in March 2013, PPGMAT became an independent program and experienced significant growth. Through its pursuit of excellence in high-quality graduate education, combined with the regular scientific output of its faculty and its strong regional impact, PPGMAT consolidated its activities, earning a grade 4 in the CAPES four-year evaluation (2013-2016). Shortly thereafter, the APCN proposal for the creation of the Academic Doctorate in Mathematics was approved, with activities commencing in March 2019. With research areas in Analysis, Geometry and Topology, and Applied Mathematics, PPGMAT's main objectives are to train highly qualified human resources in Mathematics, and to promote the production and dissemination of cutting-edge scientific knowledge aimed at regional and national development, both in the educational and academic contexts. The program currently has 22 permanent faculty members, 12 of whom hold CNPq research productivity fellowships. Through its faculty, the program maintains partnerships with several nationally and internationally renowned universities and research institutes. These collaborations arise from the development of scientific projects funded by various research agencies and foundations, including the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the National Institute of Science and Technology in Mathematics (INCTMat), the Research Support Foundation of the State of Piauí (FAPEPI), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, and The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, among others.
